Former League Two player and coach aims to jump start expansion team

Dalton Red Wolves SC will kick off its time in USL League Two in 2019, and although the expansion side will have to face an inevitable learning curve that comes with all new teams, the club will benefit greatly from its first major signing; Drew Courtney.

For Courtney, he’s no stranger to League Two after spending a number of years in the league as both a player and coach for Mississippi Brilla and Southern California Seahorses.

With those experiences under his belt, the new Dalton head coach is excited to get started in his next endeavor and bring a strong perspective for his group of players with a club that represents a homecoming for him.

Courtney, a long-time Chattanooga, Tennessee resident, will now have the chance to coach a side directly affiliated with USL League Two’s Chattanooga Red Wolves, who will also debut in 2019.

“I’m excited to get started on my next adventure as a coach, and to do it so close to home is an added bonus,” Courtney told USLLeagueTwo.com. “I think part of what makes this opportunity so great is that we’re starting this team fresh and I’m looking forward to helping Dalton develop its identity through our players and the club as a whole.

“My goal is to make sure our guys are prepared for everything that comes with playing the game. Obviously I want us to compete in games, but I want to make sure they are prepared for life after soccer as well because that is just as valuable an asset.”

Courtney’s League Two career spanned over four years as a player and coach, and he has also made a name for himself at the collegiate level, where he served as a coach for nearly eight years with Covenant College and Bryan College.

The former Lander University midfielder intends on utilizing those involvements to interact with his Dalton side and create a winning culture that will resonate with his local community.

“I really enjoyed my time with Mississippi Brilla and [Southern Cal] Seahorses during my playing days,” Courtney said. “I’m confident we can develop a quality environment here that’s going to attract players and make them want to be part of the culture we’re building.

“The organization has been working tirelessly over the last few months to make sure we have everything we need and I think we’re all extremely excited for the season to get started.”

Courtney and Dalton will open up the 2019 USL League Two season at home on May 18 against Peachtree City MOBA.
