TAMPA, Fla. - Former Development League (soon to be USL League Two) and current New York Red Bulls defender Aaron Long has been named 2018 MLS Defender of the Year.

Long, who beat out Seattle Sounders central defender Chad Marshall, Red Bulls teammate Kemar Lawrence and Atlanta United duo Michael Parkhurst and Leandro Gonzalez-Pirez, received 26.52% of the total vote.

The award was determined based on an average of votes between MLS players, club staff and media members.

The 25-year-old began his career in PDL, spending two seasons with FC Tucson in 2012 and 2013.

In 2018, Long appeared in 34 regular season matches for the Red Bulls, including making starts in 31 games. He scored three goals and added two assists for the Supporters' Shield winners, in addition to leading the club to top defensive honors after only conceding 33 goals throughout the regular season.

Long also earned his first international cap for the U.S. Men's National Team during the country's 1-1 draw against Peru on Oct. 16. The Red Bulls defender also earned a call up to the USMNT ahead of the nation's friendlies against England and Italy this month.
