Force dominate in three wins, newcomers soar across the league

While four teams can claim the top spots in their respective conferences, the FC Golden State Force have been the story of the league in Weeks One and Two of PDL play.

Here’s a look at the power rankings for Weeks One and Two.

The Force kicked off the season on May 4 with a 5-0 drubbing of San Diego Zest FC, but that was only the start for Jose Carrera-Garcia, Pedro Fonseca and company. The Force would follow up with a pair of wins in week two. First came a close, 1-0 victory over Orange County SC U23 in a stout defensive showing. The offense blasted off again on Sunday, however, putting six past San Francisco City FC in a third-consecutive shutout victory. There’s no better way to start than perfect, and that’s what the Force are through three matches. Calgary Foothills FC, Santa Cruz Breakers FC, the Southern California Seahorses and FC Tucson follow suit, all perfect to begin the year.

The Eastern Conference power rankings are filled with winners this week, but the Charlotte Eagles picked up perhaps the most impressive victory, taking down the 2017 South Atlantic Division champs in defeating the Myrtle Beach Mutiny. Reading United AC follows suit with an impressive 2-0 win over Pennsylvanian rivals Lehigh Valley United, while the Long Island Rough Riders dispatched the 2017 PDL Regular Season Champion New York Red Bulls U23 for third place. The Ocean City Nor’easters and Tobacco Road FC sit fourth and fifth with wins over FA Euro New York and the Carolina Dynamo respectively.

Only a pair of clubs in the Central Conference kicked off their campaigns in the early weeks of the season, as Lansing United and the Michigan Bucks battled to a 2-2 draw. The Bucks, by virtue of earning their point on the road, sit atop the conference with Lansing just behind at number two. The Thunder Bay Chill, the Des Moines Menace and the West Virginia Chaos all bump down from the preseason rankings as a result, with the Chaos set to kick off in Week Three away at the Dayton Dutch Lions.

By virtue of being one of two teams to win their opener in the Southern Conference - and in shutout fashion - the Lakeland Tropics rise to the top of this week’s power rankings. Their 1-0 win over Next Academy Palm Beach set the bar, which was closely followed by a pair of expansion sides. The AHFC Royals have played one and won one in their franchise history, defeating Corpus Christi FC 4-2 at home to take the second spot. The aforementioned Corpus Christi follows suit in third, having defeated Houston FC in their opener before the loss to AHFC Royals. The SIMA Aguilas and Mississippi Brilla FC follow up in fourth and fifth respectively after their draws, finishing just above their opponents.
