At least half of competing PDL clubs advance for seven consecutive year

For a seventh-consecutive year, at least half of all Premier Development League clubs competing in the 2018 U.S. Open Cup advanced to the Second Round of the tournament.

Ten teams won their First Round matches to secure advancement to the next stage, when professional United Soccer League teams join the competition. The Ocean City Nor’easters, Long Island Rough Riders, Reading United AC, Seacoast United Phantoms, South Georgia Tormenta FC, Mississippi Brilla FC, Portland Timbers U23, San Francisco City FC, the FC Golden State Force and FC Tucson all won their opening matches.

“The PDL has a long track record of success in the U.S. Open Cup and we’re proud to see that continue in 2018,” said PDL Co-Director Chris Madden. “Over the past decade, our clubs have been able to navigate a difficult First Round with consistency and go on to topple professional USL and even MLS teams in the later rounds. We look forward to seeing what our ten advancing teams this year can do in the Second Round.”

PDL clubs have competed in the Open Cup 129 times since 2012, while 79 have appeared in the Second Round, more than 60 percent of all competing PDL teams over that span. PDL clubs have also found success in the later rounds, defeating at least two professional teams every year since 2012, more than any other pre-professional league in the country. PDL clubs have advanced to the Third Round 18 times since 2012 and have advanced to the Fourth Round four times.

Here’s a look at the second round match-ups for PDL teams.
