North Carolina-based club to complete player development pyramid with PDL team

TAMPA, Fla. – Ahead of the Premier Development League’s 2018 season, the league has revealed North Carolina-based Wake FC as its third new member club for the 2019 campaign.

“The addition of Wake FC to the PDL grows the league’s footprint in a major soccer hotbed in the U.S.,” said PDL Co-Director Chris Madden. “The Carolinas and our South Atlantic Division as a whole have featured some of the best competition anywhere in the country. From the PDL Champion Charlotte Eagles to the division-winning Myrtle Beach Mutiny, the Carolinas have continued to impress and Wake FC will make for a fantastic addition to this thriving, soccer-hungry region.”

Wake Futbol Club was organized by a group of local leaders who have a passion for soccer and a true sense of community service. Founded in 2012, Wake FC has grown substantially each year, expanding into all areas of Wake County. The club was established to provide a player-focused, character-building experience for residents of the County and surrounding areas.

“The PDL has been an integral part in the growth of U.S. soccer over the past several decades,” said Wake FC President and General Manager David Allred. “When you look at the MLS SuperDraft each year, it’s evident that the majority of those players selected participated in the PDL during their collegiate careers. It speaks to the impact the PDL is having on professional soccer and it serves as a great pathway for those who seek a career in soccer.”

“We’re excited about being able to align our youth developmental system with a PDL team,” said Wake FC Youth Board President Robert Eimers. “We feel like the new team will give our young players a great level of experience.”

Wake FC’s mission is to offer boys and girls a competitive soccer experience centered on personal development, technical development and physical fitness. With a customer service approach and the goal of meeting everyone’s needs, Wake FC breaks the stereotypical club mentality in the way it operated, communicates and teaches.

“Wake FC and its leadership are going to bring a team into the PDL that produces fantastic soccer on the field,” said Joel Nash, the USL’s Director of Business Development. “But even more exciting is what Wake FC will provide for Holly Springs, North Carolina, and the community surrounding the team. The club brings a fantastic venue that has served as a center for sports in a terrific soccer community and David Allred and Wake FC will deliver quality entertainment to that community.”

Wake FC becomes the third expansion club announced for 2019, joining the previously announced Discoveries SC and Florida Elite Soccer Academy.

A part of the United Soccer Leagues, which also operates the Division II USL, the new USL Division III and Super Y League, the PDL has served as the proven stepping-stone for aspiring professionals.

More than 70 percent of all MLS SuperDraft selections since 2010 have PDL experience, including a total of 66 alums chosen in 2018. Among the many players to have played in the PDL before making their professional debuts include Newcastle United FC defender DeAndre Yedlin, 2017 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Tim Melia, 2017 MLS Defender of the Year Ike Opara and U.S. Men’s National Team members such as Darlington Nagbe, Brad Guzan, Geoff Cameron and Tim Ream.
