PDL Champion Charlotte Eagles, Michigan Bucks make return in 2018

TAMPA, Fla. - Led by the 2017 PDL Champion Charlotte Eagles and 2016 PDL Champion Michigan Bucks, the Premier Development League will have 20 member clubs feature in the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

"The U.S. Open Cup is always a fantastic opportunity for our many PDL clubs to shine against competition from all over the country in one of the world's most historic tournaments," said PDL Co-Director Chris Madden. "We're proud of each of our 20 member clubs who have qualified for this year's tournament and hope to see a repeat of the many years of success our league has enjoyed in the competition."

The teams set to compete in the 2018 edition of the tournament include the New York Red Bulls U23, the OKC Energy U23, the Seacoast United Phantoms, SIMA Aguilas, FC Golden State Force, the Michigan Bucks, the Myrtle Beach Mutiny, FC Tucson, the Portland Timbers U23, Reading United AC, FC Miami City, Mississippi Brilla FC, the Charlotte Eagles, the Lakeland Tropics, the Ocean City Nor'easters, the Long Island Rough Riders, the Western Mass Pioneers, The Villages SC, South Georgia Tormenta FC and San Francisco City FC.

Each division winner from the 2017 PDL season - Red Bulls U23, Energy U23, the Phantoms, SIMA Aguilas, FC Golden State, the Bucks, the Mutiny, FC Tucson and the Timbers U23 - qualified for this year's edition of the tournament, while the remaining ten teams qualified via at-large bids.

The 105th edition of the U.S. Open Cup will kick off on May 9, with the first round containing entrants from national amateur leagues and teams from earlier open qualification. Professional leagues - including the Division II United Soccer League - will enter in later rounds against the winners from the amateur ranks. The first round of the competition will occur on May 9, with the second and third rounds to follow on May 16 and May 23.

In the 2017 tournament, three PDL clubs advanced to the third round by defeating professional opposition, including the Bucks, Reading United and Chicago FC United.
