SIMA takes down Miami City, remains atop rankings

In the Southeast Division's Week 3 headliner, the SIMA Aguilas topped FC Miami City 2-1 to maintain their position atop the Southern Conference Power Rankings.

The Aguilas are now 2-0-0 in the 2017 PDL campaign, while 2016 Mid South Division winners OKC Energy U23 have started their title defense well with back-to-back wins.

The Tampa Bay Rowdies U23 kick off their PDL season on Saturday, while many of the teams in the conference are scheduled to play two matches in Week 4.

Southern Conference Top 5:

1. SIMA Aguilas

Previous: No. 1
Week 3 Results: W 2-1 at FC Miami City
2017 PDL Record: 2-0-0
Week 4 Matches: vs. Palm Beach Suns FC (7 p.m. ET, May 24), at IMG Academy Bradenton (6 p.m. ET, May 27)
Overview: Santiago Patino came through in the clutch once again for the SIMA Aguilas. Led by Head Coach Mike Potempa, the Aguilas defeated FC Miami City 2-1 on the road to remain perfect on the season. Biska Biyombo scored the first goal, while Patino netted the late winner to secure the win at Tropical Park Stadium.


2. OKC Energy U23

Previous: No. 2
Week 3 Results: W 3-2 vs. Houston FC
2017 PDL Record: 2-0-0
Week 4 Matches: vs. Texas United (4 p.m. CT, May 23), at FC Cleburne (7 p.m. CT, May 27)
Overview: After going down 2-0, the OKC Energy U23 rallied and topped Houston FC to record their second win of the season. Julio Moncada scored two goals in the win, while Ben Conway assisted Eric Leonard in stoppage time to secure the victory at Taft Stadium.


3. FC Miami City

Previous: No. 3
Week 3 Results: W 5-1 at Weston FC, L 1-2 vs. SIMA Aguilas
2017 PDL Record: 3-1-0
Week 4 Matches: None
Overview: While FC Miami City fell for the first time this PDL season, the club earned an impressive win against Weston FC. Joel Ouedraogo scored another goal to bring his season total to three, while Mouhoub Merabet also netted one in the win over Weston FC on Wednesday.


4. Mississippi Brilla FC

Previous: No. 4
Week 3 Results: W 2-0 at Peachtree City MOBA
2017 PDL Record: 1-0-0
Week 4 Matches: vs. Brazos Valley Cavalry F.C. (7 p.m. CT, May 25), vs. Brazos Valley Cavalry F.C. (7 p.m. CT, May 27)
Overview: Nicco Mastrangelo and André De Giorgi each scored a goal, as Mississippi Brilla FC cruised to a 2-0 win against South Atlantic Division side Peachtree City MOBA on Saturday. Head Coach Mark McKeever and Brilla FC will have two key matches against Brazos Valley Cavalry F.C. in Week 4.


5. Tampa Bay Rowdies U23

Week 3 Results: N/A
2017 PDL Record: 0-0-0
Week 4 Matches: at Weston FC (7 p.m. ET, May 27)
Overview: The Tampa Bay Rowdies U23 will finally have the opportunity to display their talent, as they kick off their PDL campaign in Week 4. Florida Gulf Coast University forward Arion Sobers-Assue and Creighton University Noah Franke are a couple of the key players to watch for the Rowdies U23 this year.
