Fuego takes top spot after wins in PDL and U.S. Open Cup

Following another dominant display, the Fresno Fuego have jumped to the top of the Western Conference Power Rankings.

The Fuego won their second Premier Development League match of the season on Sunday, taking down Burlingame Dragons FC on the road to sit tied on points atop the Southwest Division table.

1. Fresno Fuego

Next Game: vs. Ventura County Fusion (7:30 p.m. PT, May 26)
Overview: The Fresno Fuego are one of the hottest teams in the league and have jumped into the top spot in this week's edition of the Western Conference Power Rankings. After advancing to the Second Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday, the Fuego cruised to their second consecutive shutout win against Burlingame Dragons FC. Three players – Jose CuevasJoey Chica and Diego Casillas – have scored two league goals this season.


2. Calgary Foothills FC

2017 PDL Record: 2-0-0
Next Game: at TSS FC Rovers (7 p.m. PT, May 19)
Overview: Calgary Foothills FC had Week 2 off after securing two wins in the opening weekend of the PDL season. Led by Head Coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr., Foothills FC will face a tougher test in Week 3, as the club heads Vancouver for a match against TSS FC Rovers on Friday and to Sumner, Washington, for a match against the Sounders FC U23 on Sunday.


3. FC Golden State Force

2017 PDL Record: 2-0-0
Next Game: vs. Southern California Seahorses (7 p.m. PT, May 20)
Overview: The FC Golden State Force have started the 2017 campaign off strong, with two wins in league play and a victory in the First Round of the U.S. Open Cup. Talented forward Mark Verso and midfielder Jose Carrera-Garcia each have a goal on the year, as the club leads the entire Western Conference in goals scored (10) after two weeks.


4. Sounders FC U23

Previous: No. 4
Week 2 Results: N/A
2017 PDL Record: 0-0-0
Next Game: vs. Portland Timbers U23 (7:30 p.m. PT, May 19)
Overview: The Sounders FC U23, led by Head Coach Darren Sawatzky, begin their 2017 PDL season against the Portland Timbers U23 in the Game of the Week on Friday. Sawatzky has many talented players at his disposal this year, including Young Harris College defender Macauley King and University of Portland goalkeeper Paul Christensen.


5. BYU Cougars

Previous: No. 5
Week 2 Results: N/A
2017 PDL Record: 1-0-1
Next Game: at Albuquerque Sol F.C. (7:30 p.m. MDT, May 27)
Overview: Led by Head Coach Brandon Gilliam, the BYU Cougars are atop the Mountain Division after two weeks of PDL play. Blake Frischknecht, who was named PDL Player of the Week following Week 1 action, leads the club with two goals.
