Miami City enters top five; SIMA remains in top spot

After winning two home games to open its 2017 Premier Development League campaign, FC Miami City has soared into the top five of this week's Southern Conference Power Rankings.

Elsewhere, the SIMA Aguilas retain the top spot after taking down The Villages SC at Montverde Academy, and the OKC Energy U23 stay in second after a strong showing against FC Cleburne.

Southern Conference Top 5:

1. SIMA Aguilas

Previous: No. 1
Week 2 Results: W 2-1 vs. The Villages SC
2017 PDL Record: 1-0-0
Next Game: at FC Miami City (6 p.m. ET, May 20)
Overview: Led by Head Coach Mike Potempa, the SIMA Aguilas recorded their first PDL win against 2016 Southeast Division winner The Villages SC on Saturday. After giving up the first goal at home, the Aguilas quickly bounced back. Santiago Patino scored the equalizer before halftime and added another after the break to lead the Aguilas to victory.


2. OKC Energy U23

Previous: No. 2
Week 2 Results: W 3-0 vs. FC Cleburne
2017 PDL Record: 1-0-0
Next Game: vs. Houston FC (11 a.m. CT, May 20)
Overview: The OKC Energy U23 look strong once again after winning the Mid South Division in 2016. Noah Keats is off to a hot start, scoring two goals in the club's 3-0 win against FC Cleburne. Keats netted 13 goals in 2016 en route to earning PDL All-Southern Conference Team honors. Sven Koenig, who was named PDL Young Player of the Year in 2016, scored as well.


3. FC Miami City

Week 2 Results: W 4-0 vs. Lakeland Tropics; W 3-1 vs. South Florida Surf
2017 PDL Record: 2-0-0
Next Game: at Weston FC (7 p.m. ET, May 17)
Overview: FC Miami City is off to a flying start, winning back-to-back home games to kick off its 2017 campaign. After two games, Naim Hamdi and Joel Ouedraogo have each tallied two goals, while Bryan Perea and Mouhoub Merabet have contributed to the score lines as well.


4. Tampa Bay Rowdies U23

Previous: No. 3
Week 2 Results: N/A
2017 PDL Record: 0-0-0
Next Game: at Weston FC (7 p.m. ET, May 27)
Overview: While the Tampa Bay Rowdies U23 do not kick off their season until late May, the club has a talented roster at its disposal. Florida Gulf Coast University forward Arion Sobers-Assue and Creighton University Noah Franke are among the players to keep an eye on as the season moves along.


5. Mississippi Brilla FC

2017 PDL Record: 0-0-0
Next Game: at Peachtree City MOBA (7:30 p.m. ET, May 20)
Overview: Mississippi Brilla FC begins its PDL campaign in Week 3, and Head Coach Mark McKeever has multiple talented players to watch this campaign, including University of Charleston defender Thomas Vancaeyezeele.
