A total of five expansion franchises – the Myrtle Beach Mutiny, Nashville SC U23, North Carolina FC U23, Tobacco Road FC and Wilmington Hammerheads FC – join the South Atlantic Division for the 2017 Premier Development League regular season.

Led by the Charlotte Eagles, who have won back-to-back division titles, 11 clubs will participate in the Mid Atlantic Division this season. The Carolina Dynamo, who have won six PDL division titles and have claimed two Eastern Conference titles, will also look to stay atop the South Atlantic table after reaching the PDL Playoffs in 2016.

The Tri-Cities Otters, Peachtree City MOBA and South Georgia Tormenta FC are set to begin their second PDL campaigns, while the SC United Bantams look to stay in the hunt at the top of the division after earning a PDL Playoffs berth alongside the Eagles and Dynamo last season.

Many talented prospects have played in the South Atlantic Division over the years, including Columbus Crew SC defender and Pittsburgh Riverhounds loanee Lalas Abubakar and Chicago Fire standouts Jonathan Campbell and Brandt Bronico.
