Matthew Hurlow-Paonessa is the latest 2016 PDL alum to sign a professional contract, as the United Soccer League's Phoenix Rising FC announced the addition of the San Diego Zest FC talent on Friday, pending league and USSF approval.
“I saw him at the Ventura combine, and he was a big, fast and exciting forward that caught my eye,” said Phoenix Rising FC Head Coach Frank Yallop. “The more I watched him, the more I liked him. And I think his work rate and attitude should be a good asset to the club.”
Hurlow-Paonessa appeared in nine matches for Zest FC during the 2016 PDL regular season and one game in the 2016 PDL Playoffs. The forward netted nine goals and recorded one assist during the regular season, leading Zest FC to a 8-1-5 record. Hurlow-Paonessa then added two more goals in Zest FC's first playoff game in franchise history.
The 22-year-old played four years for Chico State in Division II of the NCAA, scoring 17 goals and providing eight assists in 73 appearances.
