Stanford finished the 2016 NCAA Division I campaign on top once again, as 11* PDL players from the 2016 regular season helped guide the program to its second consecutive title.
Andrew Epstein, who played for San Francisco City FC in 2016, proved to be the hero of the match at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, Texas, as the Cardinal played Wake Forest to a 0-0 tie. In penalty kicks, Epstein made two key stops, including one on Michigan Bucks standout Brad Dunwell, to clinch the 5-4 win in PKs.
The Carolina Dynamo’s Tanner Beason, Burlingame Dragons FC’s Corey Baird and the Portland Timbers U-23s’ Foster Langsdorf and Sam Werner all converted from the spot. Brian Nana-Sinkam, (Dragons FC), Drew Skundrich, (Dragons FC), Nicolas Corti, (Dragons FC), Amir Bashti, (Dragons FC), Bryce Marion (San Francisco City) and Trevor Hyman (San Francisco City) all took part in the Cardinal’s 2016 title run.
