Burlingame Dragons FC opened up its 2016 PDL season on a solid note with a pair of victories this past weekend.

The Dragons went on the road to post a 1-0 victory against the Fresno Fuego on Friday in the PDL Game of the Week at Chukchansi Park in Fresno, Calif. The match drew an impressive crowd of 5,237. Jamael Cox scored the lone goal in the 57th minute off of a Gabe Silveira assist. Burlingame endured a shorthanded final half hour as Silveira was issued a red card in the 60th minute, but the Dragons’ defense held strong the rest of the way to earn the full three points.

On Sunday, the Dragons posted a 4-0 victory against expansion side LA Laguna FC at Citrus College in Glendora, Calif. Matt Weisenfarth scored two goals to lead the way. Manny Cazares added a first-half goal and Jamael Cox capped off the scoring with a second-half penalty kick.

Burlingame now gears up for the first round of the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a Wednesday match against the Sacramento Gold. The Dragons’ next league match is Saturday, May 21, against the BYU Cougars in Provo, Utah.

Elsewhere, the Long Island Rough Riders earned a strong 2-0 victory against the Westchester Flames during their home opener on Saturday. Tyler Botte and Junior Rosero each tallied a goal for Long Island and Jamaican goalkeeper Richard Trench made a pair of saves for the clean sheet.

Brazilian-born Alencar Junior made his debut for the Seacoast United Phantoms and helped his new side with a late second-half goal to earn a 1-1 draw against Junior’s former side, the Western Mass Pioneers.

The Kitsap Pumas defeated Victoria Highlanders FC 3-0 on Saturday, while the South Florida Surf, FC Tucson and Lane United FC each earned 1-0 victories.

Saturday’s match between San Francisco City FC and the Las Vegas Mobsters was postponed.
