2016 PDL Season Preview: Southeast Division

The 2016 PDL season’s Southeast Division features seven teams, with two newcomers in Florida Surf FC and The Villages SC. The remainder of the field features FC Miami City, Floridians FC, IMG Academy Bradenton, Palm Beach Suns FC and Southwest Florida Adrenaline.

FC Miami City was the division runner-up in 2015.

Southeast Division Breakdown:
FC Miami City:
The squad posted a 7-4-3 record to take second in the division last season and advance to the Southern Conference Championship. Miami defeated Mississippi Brilla 3-2 in a shootout to win the conference semifinal but saw its postseason run end with a loss to Ocala Stampede in the conference final. Significant alumni: Daniel Gonzalez (OKC Energy FC) and Hugo Leroux. Key returning players: Bryan Perea and Ryan Parrado. Key newcomers: Marvin Hezel.

Florida Surf FC: The Surf prepare for their first season in the PDL. The club features transfers Lucas Coutinho and Tom Gavin. They are coached by Peter Fuller and Trevor Adair.

Floridians FC: Though Floridians FC has come up short of the postseason in its six previous campaigns, the club is coming off its strongest showing in 2015, a fourth-place finish and a 5-7-2 record. Significant alumni: Daniel Mendes.

IMG Academy Bradenton: IMG finished fifth in the conference last season with a 5-7-2 record. It marked the sixth consecutive season in which IMG finished outside of the postseason picture. The club is headed by Kevin Hartman and Rusty Scarborough. Significant alumni: Connor Sparrow (Real Monarchs SLC).

Palm Beach Suns FC: The Suns prepare for their second PDL season. Palm Beach’s first campaign included a 5-8-1 record and a sixth-place finish in the division. Key returning players: Victor Santana.

Southwest Florida Adrenaline: The Adrenaline just missed out on the postseason in 2015 with a 6-4-4 record and 22 points to finish third in the division – two points behind second-place FC Miami City. They touted the division’s best defense, allowing only 12 goals in 14 regular-season games a year ago. The upcoming 2016 season will be Southwest Florida’s fourth in the PDL. Bobby Paterson was recently announced as the team’s new head coach. Significant alumni: Kenny Doublette (Louisville City FC), Mamadou Traore. Key returning players: Qsiyer Billal and Ben Tweedie.

The Villages SC: The Villages SC prepares for its first PDL season. The club includes transfer Paulo Vaz. The club is coached by Anderson DaSilva, formerly of the Jersey Express.
