It’s the Chesapeake Division veterans against the new kids on the block. Lionsbridge FC came away with a 2-0 victory over Annapolis Blues FC when these teams met at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in June. This game has quickly become crucial with the two clubs having the same maximum points and both currently sitting outside the top two spots needed to make the playoffs.
Louisiana Krewe FC is currently deadlocked with Little Rock Rangers for first place in the Mid South Division. Trailing just behind is the Denton Diablos, who need a victory in this one to keep hope alive of a playoff berth in their inaugural League Two season. The Krewe won 4-1 last time; can the Diablos flip the script as the matchup moves to Texas?
Laredo Heat SC has run away with the Lonestar Division since the beginning of the season. A win will make that official, booking their ticket to the playoffs and crowning them as division champions. Twin City Toucans cannot win the division anymore, but an upset in Laredo would give them three valuable points as they fight for a wild card spot.
It’s a showdown in the west between the two teams currently in position to make the playoffs. Taking all three points here could push one team to the Southwest Division crown, and the other may fall out of the playoff picture. This one is not to be missed with so much on the line.
This final stretch of the League Two schedule is littered with head-to-head matchups between playoff-contending teams. For Rochester it is do or die, after both Sueno FC and Minneapolis City SC won on Wednesday. For Sueno, they are neck and neck with Minneapolis City SC for the Heartland Division title and now is not the time to slip up.
Vermont Green FC is home to one of the best atmospheres in League Two and this year has also been playing some of the best soccer in the league. With a playoff spot already clinched, their sights are now set on claiming the Northeast Division. Saturday night’s matchup against Black Rock FC will be a good one as the visitors are still scraping for a playoff spot and have grinded out some key results this season.
Sunflower State FC’s debut League Two season has been a mixed bag. They won at home against Des Moines Menace and Peoria City but have faltered in other matches. Winning the season series against Des Moines could give Sunflower State a nice boost as their focus shifts toward next season. The Menace still has something to play for even with their playoff spot guaranteed, as a win claims them the Great Plains Division title.
Almaden FC has turned up the heat in the Nor Cal Division, winning their last three games. They hit the road to face Academica SC who is fighting to keep their playoff dreams alive. A loss for the hosts would be the knockout punch, while Almaden dropping points would leave a big dent in their chances of making this year’s playoffs.
Steel City FC jumped out to be the front runner for the Great Forest Division with a massive 4-1 win at FC Buffalo last week. Now facing their toughest remaining competition, Toledo Villa FC, they have a chance to make their postseason trip official with a win. The visitors will do everything they can to play spoiler and help this division go down to the wire.
The holiday weekend will come to a close with another clash of the titans, and again from the Chesapeake Division, as Northern Virginia FC hosts Lionsbridge FC. A textbook six-pointer. If Northern Virginia win, they will feel like they have one foot in the door of the playoffs, while Lionsbridge needs these three points to wreak some havoc in the final week.
