LONG ISLAND, N.Y. – The Long Island Rough Riders played a thrilling, back-and-forth match against the Charlotte Independence in the US Open Cup but fell just short with a 3-2 loss in extra time to the USL League One outfit.

Long Island opened the scoring shortly after halftime with a brilliant volley following a rebound from Jacob Woznicki fired into the back of the net in the 49th minute. However, the Independence would equalize through Rafael Jauregui in the 79th minute to force the game to extra time.

The Rough Riders then scored another sensational volley following a corner kick as Elia Khodri sweetly struck the bouncing ball to make it 2-2 following Christian Chaney’s earlier goal in extra time. Jauregui would then secure his brace with the winner in the 107th minute to knock Long Island out in the First Round.
