Akron, Ohio & Tampa, Fla. – The United Soccer League announced today that Akron City FC will join USL League Two beginning in the 2025 season.
The club was formed in 2021, competing in other pre-professional leagues and improving each season ahead of their move to USL League Two.
Their mission is to proudly represent the Akron and Summit County communities, bringing them together through soccer. The club strives to become a staple of Akron’s vibrant sports scene, focusing on developing their supporter culture and fan base that truly represents Akron. The club will prioritize providing local players and coaches the opportunity to demonstrate their talents on a national stage.
"Joining USL League Two marks an exciting chapter in Akron City's history,” Nick Turchan, club co-owner, said. “The last three years have been instrumental in building a strong foundation, and we are grateful for the relationships and experiences we have developed. This move aligns with our vision to increase the club's impact on the community, provide a platform for aspiring players to develop and showcase their talent. The club's leadership looks forward to building out both a women's team and an Academy program over the next couple of years. We’re excited for what’s ahead and look forward to continuing to grow alongside our incredible fans and supporters."
Akron City will compete in the Central Conference in 2025 and will be coached in their first League Two season by Andy Hoggarth.
"Akron City FC's move to USL League Two marks an exciting new chapter for the club and the continued growth of soccer at this level in Akron,” Hoggarth said. “This step allows us to continue to attract top talent, and further solidify Akron as a hub for soccer not only in Ohio but the broader Midwest region. We're committed to building a team and culture that our fans and city can be proud of."
“It’s incredibly important to encourage the growth and development of community-focused, fan-focused clubs,” Joel Nash, USL Senior Vice President of Youth and Pre-Professional Properties, said. “Akron City represents a real passion for the game of soccer, and a passion for Summit County. We’re really excited to have this platform where they can show off all the great work they do.”
