Hosei Kijima, 17th pick to Saint Louis City SC, playing for Sarasota Paradise in 2023
TAMPA, Fla. - More than half of all players selected in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft on Tuesday spent their summer playing in USL League Two.
Of the 87 players drafted to play in the top division of American soccer, 50 played in League Two either in 2022 or 2023.
Top overall pick Tyrese Spicer, coming off a legendary career for Des Moines Menace, is headed to Toronto FC. He was joined in the top five selections by 2023 League Two Player of the Year Logan Farrington, from Ventura County Fusion, and Vermont Green defender Nate Jones.
2023 Defender of the Year Hugo Bacharach was taken ninth by Minnesota United FC, after two stellar summers for Flint City Bucks and a successful fall at Indiana University.
All in all, 17 players in the 29-pick first round hailed from League Two. Flint City Bucks had the most players selected with five, including Bacharach at nine. Three other clubs (Long Island Rough Riders, Manhattan SC and Ventura County Fusion) had four players selected.
Orlando City SC and Real Salt Lake drafted the most League Two alumni, with four selections each.
