BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Birmingham Legion FC announced on Thursday the club had signed forward Diba Nwegbo ahead of the 2023 USL Championship season. The transaction is pending league and federation approval.

A former standout in the youth ranks for Alabama FC, Nwegbo joins Legion FC after a standout collegiate career at the College of William & Mary and a stellar season in USL League Two leading the line for Vermont Green FC last summer.

“We are excited to sign Diba to his first professional contract here in Birmingham as he has ties to the area having played club ball for Alabama FC,” said Jay Heaps, Legion FC President and General Manager. “He’s a talented attacking player with great potential that will come in and make an impact on our forward line.”

The 21-year-old was one of the leading goalscorers in League Two during the 2022 season, bagging nine goals in just 12 games for Vermont to earn All-Eastern Conference honors. While he is set to graduate from W&M this spring, Nwegbo completed his time on the field this past fall, scoring nine goals, showing off more creative skill with 17 assists, and earning a spot on an All-Colonial Athletic Association Second Team and Third Team from 2019-2022.

In high school, growing up in Acworth, GA, just northwest of Atlanta, Nwegbo played in Birmingham for Alabama FC in 2018-19 and totaled 17 goals and 10 assists en route to earning an invite to the 2018 ECNL National Training Camp and to a Nigeria U-17 Men’s National Team camp.

“I’m very excited to be back in Birmingham and to begin my professional career here,” said Nwegbo. “It’s taken a lot of hard work and dedication to get to this point and that will only continue. I’m ready to give my all to the team for us to succeed and ultimately win the league this year.”
