USL Championship club hopes to use League Two as pathway to Championship

MONTEREY, Calif. - Today the USL announced that Monterey Bay F.C. 2 will be the latest club to join USL League Two.

“It is a fantastic opportunity for the region to have a pre-professional team that creates a clearer path to the first team,” said Monterey Bay F.C. Sporting Director and Head Coach Frank Yallop. “Now, aspiring young players in the area can play for MBFC2 with an eye towards our USL Championship side. It is the beginning of a much anticipated ‘path-to-pro’ program for the club.”

The club’s mission is to create a pathway for players to try and reach the USL Championship senior team and grow the sport of soccer for the Monterey Bay community.

Their soccer operations are led by Frank Yallop, who also serves as the senior team’s head coach.

“It’s so exciting to have another USL Championship showing their belief in USL League Two” Joel Nash, USL VP of Youth and Pre-Professional Properties, said. “It’s proof that this is a great way to discover and develop top level talents – League Two alumni are making a difference every season on professional teams.”

Monterey Bay F.C. was founded in 2021 and entered USL Championship competition in 2022. The club plays their matches on the campus of California State University, Monterey Bay.
