League One’s Union Omaha awaits winner between Des Moines, Minneapolis following Second Round draw

CHICAGO – The USL League Two teams set to participate in the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Friday learned their potential opponents for the Second Round of the tournament in April after the announcement of the draw by U.S. Soccer, with a collection of intriguing regional showdowns up for grabs in March’s First Round.

New Deep North Division rivals the Des Moines Menace and Minneapolis City SC will square off for the chance to face defending USL League One title holder Union Omaha at Morrison Stadium on the campus of Creighton University. Should the Menace advance, it would set up a meeting of champions with Des Moines entering this year’s competition as 2021 League Two title winner after their success last summer.

In another all-League Two matchup, South Carolina United FC Bantams and NC Fusion U23 will meet for a chance to visit the Charlotte Independence in the Second Round at Memorial Stadium. Further south, The Villages SC could face top Championship club the Tampa Bay Rowdies at Al Lang Stadium should it come through its contest against the Orlando FC Wolves. Out west Park City Red Wolves SC will face the Championship’s New Mexico United if it advances from its opening round game against Las Vegas Legends FC.

Two League Two clubs are in line to host a Second Round contest with West Chester United SC set to host AC Syracuse Pulse at PF Kildare’s Pub Turf Field if it should take victory against FC Motown. Also in line to host with a First Round win are the Western Mass Pioneers, who would host the Flower City Union at Lusitano Stadium if they advance past Brockton FC United.

Elsewhere, the Portland Timbers U23 will earn a matchup with the USL Championship’s Sacramento Republic FC should it advance, while the Ocean City Nor’easters will get the chance to face new professional side Rochester New York FC with an opening round victory, and Chicago FC United will head to face Forward Madison FC should it progress in the First Round.

Thirty-one matches overall will be played in the Second Round, with finalized dates and kickoff times set to be announced by U.S. Soccer in the coming days. The winners will advance to the Third Round scheduled for April 19-21, where 17 clubs from Major League Soccer will enter the tournament. The remaining eight clubs from MLS will enter in the Round of 32, scheduled for May 10-11.

Contests in the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup will air exclusively on ESPN+, which will also serve as the home for every game of the 2022 USL Championship and League One seasons as they begin in March and April.
