PATUXENT RIVER, Md.- The United Soccer League today announced Patuxent Football Athletics as the latest club to join both the USL W League and USL League Two for the 2022 season.
“We are ecstatic that we are joining the USL with both a women's and a men's team in 2022,” said Myron Garnes, Technical Director of Patuxent Football Athletics. “We are overjoyed to be partnering with the leader in pre-professional men's soccer. My goal has always been to bring this rare opportunity to the men and women in our southern Maryland region. I feel the new USL W League delivers a pathway for women in our community to compete, coach, and manage -all at a very high level. We are truly blessed to be joining the USL franchise at such an exciting time.”
Founded in 2018, Patuxent Football Athletics was originally established as a premier development academy with a focus on providing elite programming to players ages 13 to 19. The club operates on the mission of providing southern Maryland's top pre-professional players the opportunity to train and compete at the highest level while maintaining their collegiate eligibility. Through this mission, Patuxent Football Athletics hopes to create programming that helps its players develop to their full potential while fostering a passion for excellence and creating an environment in which players can exercise both personal and professional growth.
The club’s player-centered training model focuses on providing quality programs and pathways to help lead its membership to the next level of their careers in the professional ranks. Joining the USL will not only allow the Maryland-based club to enhance its player development model, but also provide additional growth opportunities for the club’s executives, coaches and staff.
Through its membership in the W League, the club will offer athletes in southern Maryland and its surrounding cities direct access to pre-professional careers in soccer. The club will also see the benefits of the USL’s fully formed women’s pathway, which offers playing and coaching opportunities at all levels from youth to pro.
“We’re excited to continue growing our footprint in the Mid Atlantic region with the addition of such a strong club in Patuxent Football Athletics,” said Betsy Haugh, USL Director of Women’s Soccer Operations. “Patuxent Football Athletics and its leadership team will be a great addition to the USL W League, and we look forward to bringing more pre-professional opportunities to players in southern Maryland.”
Patuxent Football Athletics will also field a men’s pre-professional team in League Two’s Mid Atlantic Division. Participation in the USL’s men’s pre-professional league offers clubs the opportunity to provide its players with a proven pathway to the men’s professional realm while actively competing against the nation’s most competitive clubs in this space.
“Patuxent Football Athletics has proven its dedication to providing its players the best avenues for growth,” said Joel Nash, USL Vice President of Youth & Pre-Professional. “We are excited to welcome this club to the league for its inaugural season in 2022 and look forward to all they will accomplish in partnership with the USL.”
