2021 season saw the addition of 10 new League Two clubs in the Central Conference

TAMPA, Fla. -  This year, USL League Two announced the addition of 24 new Path2Pro clubs, with 10 of those clubs joining the league’s Central Conference. With only a couple of weeks left until the start of a new year, the league reminisces on the accomplishments of the 2021 expansion teams both on and off the pitch.

This past season, FC Wichita announced its plans to integrate its current youth programming into the USL Academy for the 2022 season. The Kansas-based club fielded a team in the men’s pre-professional space in USL League Two during the 2021 season and began to introduce its current youth players to the first team, with nine playing in a preseason friendly against USL Championship side FC Tulsa on April 5. Entrance into the USL Academy will allow FC Wichita to continue to build on its development pathway, allowing more opportunities for its players to test their skills at an elite level of play.

Last February, Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry provided an update on the efforts to bring a downtown soccer stadium to the city that could become home to prospective USL League One club Fort Wayne FC. Henry gave further details on the $150 million development, which not only features a soccer-specific stadium that would bring professional soccer to the city but the additional construction of a fieldhouse, an event center and a hotel. The construction of a new soccer-specific venue in Fort Wayne mirrors those at other current USL League One clubs and sets the club up for an electric matchday experience in years to come.

Kalamazoo FC took this year’s Central Conference by storm, finishing in a first place standing in the Great Lakes Division and earning a spot in 2021 League Two Playoffs. Overall, the team showed off its strengths week in and week out, but three Kalamazoo players found themselves at the top of the league’s talent charts. Defender Paul Efang, midfielder Daire O’Riordan, and forward Cyrus Harmon were among the Central Conference’s best players of the year, each qualifying for a spot on the 2021 USL League Two Central Conference Team of the Year. Efang assisted Kalamazoo’s defense in only conceding 13 goals while maintaining three clean sheets, O’Riordan was a consistent contributor to Kalamazoo’s offense, putting up four goals and one assist for the Michigan-based side and Harmon was able to slot home eight goals for his team this summer.

It is always a great feat when an inaugural season club qualifies for a spot in the playoffs and Kings Hammer did just that in its first season in the Path2Pro. Finishing in a third place standing in the Great Lakes Division, Kings Hammer rounded out its season with a 8-2-4 record, earning a berth in the 2021 League Two Playoffs. The team was steady on the pitch this season, playing with confidence on the ball and exhibiting a hunger for wins in every match on the pitch. The Ohio-based team’s run for a title was cut a little short after losing to Mississippi Brilla FC in the first round of the 2021 League Two Playoffs.

The Little Rock Rangers made a major investment in its community this season after teaming up with Little Rock Parks & Recreation to create more accessible spaces for community members to enjoy outdoor recreation. As a part of this investment, the Little Rock Rangers sponsored a Rangers-branded mini-pitch as a way to make improvements to Wakefield Park on the south side of the city. A $100,000 contract with the U.S. Soccer Foundation allowed the city to construct a mini-pitch soccer facility, making soccer more accessible to members of the Little Rock community. According to the U.S. Soccer Foundation's website, the organization has committed to building 1,000 mini-pitches by 2026, describing the facilities as "ideal for urban areas and other communities where finding a safe place to play can be difficult."

Back in April, Oakland County FC launched a new partnership with KICKSTART! Toddler Soccer, an organization that works to create programming that teaches toddlers how to refine their motor skills while slowly introducing soccer fundamentals. With 3,000 toddlers registering each year to be a part of the growing program, Oakland County FC’s new partnership offered toddlers and their parents a chance to see an up close look at the game at a high level. Included within this partnership, the League Two team provided players for ongoing KICKSTART! classes and matches, in addition to hosting a championship toddler match at the halftime of its June 26 friendly.

St. Louis Scott Gallagher’s Patrick Schulte finishes second on League Two Top Prospects list

St. Louis Scott Gallagher’s Patrick Schulte was a standout among Path2Pro keepers during the 2021 season. His ability to read the field and swiftness between the sticks earned him a second place finish out of 50 prospects on the final League Two Top Prospects list of the season. Schulte played in nine matches this season for the St. Louis-based club, recording 810 minutes on the field. In his time on the pitch, Schulte maintained two clean sheets and made 50 saves during the regular season while only conceding 13 goals in total.

Toledo Villa FC’s May 25 match against Oakland County FC was an absolute sight to see for USL League Two fans. In 90 minutes on the pitch, Toledo Villa FC and Oakland County FC managed to put up a whopping 10 goals, making it the highest scoring match of the 2021 season. Toledo Villa’s Federico Reali kicked off the scoring frenzy for the Ohio-based team with Jordy Lopez, Kalen Nichols, Mike Moser and Kainan Dos Santos also adding one goal a piece to the team’s scoreboard. At the final whistle, Toledo Villa FC and Oakland County ended in a 5-5 draw that left fans stunned on the sidelines of the match.
