Joao Gomiero and Jake Nicholson Share 2021 Assist Champion Award

The two midfielders finished tied atop the League Two assists chart with eight assists apiece

TAMPA, Fla.- With eight assists each, North Carolina Fusion U23’s Joao Gomiero and West Virginia United’s Jake Nicholson have won a share of the 2021 Assist Champion award. The award is given to the player/s with the highest number of assists at the end of the season. 

Gomiero had the season of a lifetime with North Carolina Fusion U23 making a run all the way to the 2021 League Two Final. The quick-minded midfielder was a steady presence for the Fusion playing a total of 904 minutes and scoring six goals while leading the team and the league in assists. Gomiero was an essential part of the Fusion squad as the team earned the honors of South Atlantic Division title-winners, Southern Conference title-winners, top goal-scorers of the league with 48 goals and a much-deserved spot in the 2021 League Two Final. 

Nicholson was a clear standout in League Two this summer helping West Virginia United to a third place finish in the South Atlantic Division and a trip to the 2021 League Two Playoffs. In his 722 minutes on the pitch this season, Nicholson scored a single goal against North Carolina FC U23 and led the team and the league in assists with eight assists to his name this season. Nicholson’s ability to take control of the field assisted West Virginia United in earning a season record of 9-3-2.
