The 2020 USL Championship regular season has come to a close, meaning it’s time to reflect on the campaign’s top performers. Like previous seasons, League Two alumni played major roles in contributing to their clubs’ success at the professional level. We took a look at 10 players with League Two experience who stood out this year at the highest level in USL.
Williams was a big reason why Lou City had yet another stellar regular season. The midfielder completed 962 passes, second-most of any player in the Championship, and did so at a highly-efficient 86 percent success rate. He also got forward well to chip in four goals and an assist. Williams played every match for Lou City, and if the team hopes to make a fourth-straight trip to the Championship Final, it’ll need him to stay at his best.
Though only a rookie, Lapa’s performances made him a regular fixture in the Legion FC team as he appeared in all 16 matches for the Alabama club. Featuring primarily in the No. 10 role, he was a major contributor for Birmingham, providing seven goals and five assists while creating 39 chances to go with 34 successful key passes.
Langsdorf was the leading scorer on a Reno team that absolutely poured in goals this season. He had 10 tallies to his name, and that figure becomes even more impressive when you consider he played just 856 minutes. A goal every 86 minutes makes him one of the league’s most efficient strikers.
Ketterer had a fantastic year in the net for El Paso, leading the USL Championship in clean sheets with eight. He made 38 saves as well, good for ninth among all goalkeepers, and is a vocal leader for a Locomotive FC side with ambitions of making a deep playoff run.
Chicago FC United product Gonzalez Asensi put together an excellent campaign for Portland Timbers II, scoring eight goals in 10 games for a rate of roughly one goal per 105 minutes. He also chipped in an assist, 11 key passes and 12 chances created in that span.
Francois was a force to be reckoned with on the USL Championship’s top regular season team. He led Reno with seven assists and scored six goals of his own as well, one of them a spectacular effort from distance. Passing at an 80 percent success rate, he also set up 40 chances.
