Today was scorching hot for our Colorado Rush players with temperatures reaching as high as 91 degrees. However, the heat didn’t stop the team from putting in the work and making the most out of today’s training session. Being in week four with the weather starting to heat up, you notice some fatigue, especially after such a heavy and intense training session yesterday. Martin Veys stated, “At the end of the training session during the last few drills I was getting tired, but I will continue to improve in this area as the training sessions go on.” Veys showed great poise and penetration throughout today’s training session. As a winger, he was able to whip in some dangerous crosses and create opportunities for his teammates.

Coach Lewis Wilcox spent a good portion of today’s session working individually with goalkeepers Cooper Erickson, Edgar Vargas, and Ben Knust. They focused on footwork and their placement for different gamelike scenarios. This work translated into the small sided game at the end when Vargas had a world class diving save.

Coach Elliot Prost stated that, “the main theme of today’s practice was having a high target, with the entry ball going far and then having people come from underneath.” As the training session progressed so did these specific tactics.

Aaron Martinez stated that “combining and communication were a big piece in today’s training.” Being a part of the Rush midfield, he was a huge factor in the buildup play, getting the balls to the target forwards, and coming in underneath to maintain possession. Martinez showcased some great awareness and playmaking opportunities today.

The development in these three and a half weeks of training has been translating to the pitch. Veys feels that his development so far will give him an advantage for his upcoming college season. Martinez also explained that, “I feel my touches have gotten cleaner and my mental quickness being able to play faster has improved.” The Colorado Rush USL2 team will be back tomorrow to wrap up week four.
