Former League Two stars pick up national recognition

Welcome to the latest edition of College Rewind, where we recap standout performances from League Two alumni in college soccer. As the NCAA season got into gear during its second week, here’s who caught our eye.

THE LEAD: UCLA upsets #3 Terrapins thanks to Iloski hat trick

Former Ogden City SC star Milan Iloski scored all three goals in UCLA’s 3-2 victory against Maryland in the Bruins’ home opener. Though the highly-touted Terps jumped in front early, Iloski responded with three unanswered goals, the first in the 19th minute on an assist from his brother and Ogden City teammate Eric Iloski.

Milan then gave UCLA the lead with a rocket from the edge of the penalty area a few minutes into the second half. He scored the eventual game winner in the 62nd minute, picking the Maryland goalkeeper’s pocket and maintaining composure in the box while evading multiple sliding defenders. The hat trick was the first in nearly eight years for UCLA. Iloski was named the Top Drawer Soccer National Player of the Week on Tuesday for his efforts.

Hideki double-dips, earns Conference Player of the Week honors

Reading United AC’s former midfield dynamo Felipe Hideki scored two goals in two consecutive games for MidAmerica Nazarene University and was named the Heart of America Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Hideki bagged a first-half brace in MNU’s season-opening 5-1 win over Bethel, and followed it up with another two strikes in the Pioneers’ 4-0 thumping of Florida National. His college performances continue an impressive run for Hideki, who helped Reading reach the League Two Final last month and was a member of the 2019 League Two Team of the Year.

Trejo leading red-hot CSUN offense

Another of League Two’s best has enjoyed an incredible start to his collegiate season after making the League Two Western Conference Team of the Year. Daniel Trejo has scored four goals in four games, leading California State Northridge to an undefeated start to the season that has included wins against Ohio State and Dayton at the Bert & Iris Wolstein Classic in Columbus, Ohio. Trejo was named Top Drawer Soccer’s National Player of the Week last week, and picked up Big West Offensive Player of the Week honors as well. With Trejo as the focal point, CSUN had the top-scoring attack in Division I as of Monday and is on the fringes of the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll as it prepares to host two ranked opponents in Washington (Thursday) and UCLA (Sunday) this week.

Kasey French anchors Washington defensive wall

The former Sounders FC U23 defender had a lights-out week for the Huskies, contributing to three clean sheets. UW has won all four of its games so far and allowed just one goal, defeating two ranked opponents (No. 18 Denver, No. 16 Michigan State) along the way. The Huskies have shot up to the eighth spot in the United Soccer Coaches poll, and French was included in Top Drawer Soccer’s Team of the Week. He’ll be tasked with stopping Trejo on Thursday night as the Huskies travel to face the Matadors.
