This Sunday night, Tormenta FC 2 clash at Erk Russell Park in Statesboro, Georgia for the second semi-final matchup. Reading will be looking for a second shot at the League Two title after falling to Calgary in the finals last season while Tormenta reaches a semi-final for the first time.
South Georgia got here with a battle in the Southern Conference coming up against Southeast Divison winners, The Villages, in the first round. The Villages tried to hit Tormenta on the counter-attack with a lot of pace and experience up top but found they couldn’t breakdown the resolute South Georgia backline. But Tormenta couldn’t find a way to score either in the first half and took a 0-0 scoreline to halftime. The second half would be much more lively with four goals flying in, three by Tormenta from Luca Mayr, JJ Donnelly, and Adrian Billhardt to cement the win and move onto the Southern Conference Final. South Georgia played Brazos Valley Cavalry in the next round and this time would get off to a hot start striking in three goals in the first half and letting in just one to a normally high scoring side. They would strike twice more in the second half to take a massive 5-1 win and the Southern Conference Title.
Reading played out two closely contested matches in the Eastern Conference Finals with their first game against GPS Portland Phoenix requiring a penalty shootout to decide the winner. Portland got on the board just before the half through a quick counter, taking a 1-0 lead into the half. Just seven minutes after returning from halftime Reading would strike back and hold out the result to win in penalty kicks. In the Final Reading only needed the one goal and a whole lot of defending to take down the Western Mass Pioneers and claim the Eastern Conference.
The winner of Sunday night’s matchup in Statesboro will play the winner of Saturday’s semi-final between the Flint City Bucks and FC Golden State force in the USL League Two Final.
